間 (Ma)
sound design + editing
Salt Lake City, US
Concept:
The soundtrack was composed for Chang Liu (Leo)'s screendance work 間 (Ma). The display screen of this work was intentionally designed in the shape of a full circle inside the conventional black square-shaped frame that usually bounds a film-screening space. This design questions the conventional conceptions of video consumption, be it on cinematic screens, television sets, or other devices. It is related to the philosophical concept of "天圆地方" (Tiānyuán Dìfāng) - "Sky is round, Earth is square." This ancient Chinese cosmology describes the relationship between humankind, nature, and the divine, symbolizing the infinite sky (round) and the solid earth (square), which together represent the balance and harmony between these two realms.

Two Feathers
originial composition
Härnösand, Sweden
Intro:
This music work was composed for Chang Liu (Leo)'s dance work Two Feathers as part of Vår Vår, a post-pandemic outdoor dance event produced by Norrdans, which had its premiere in spring 2021. Taking the cultural and historical use of pheasant feathers in ancient China-where they were used as decoration for weapons and costumes, and as props in ritual dances and religious sacrifices since the 8th century-the work tries to bring continuity from tradition to contemporary expression.

Intro:
This sound work was made for Chang Liu (Leo)'s screendance work placed, that is juxtaposing two divergent, even conflicting, scenes and placing them next to each other on a shared screen. This deliberate placement creates a dual experience for the viewer-that is both challenging and embracing, inviting them to simultaneously enjoy and endure the interplay of opposing elements.
