Concept:
Two Feathers is an improvisation-based dance piece created for Vår Vår, a post-pandemic outdoor dance event produced by Norrdans, which had its premiere in spring 2021. Taking the cultural and historical use of faisan feathers in ancient China-where they were used as decoration for weapons and costumes, and as props in ritual dances and religious sacrifices since the 8th century-the work tries to bring continuity from tradition to contemporary expression.
In this performance, I used two feathers as an extensions of my body, symbolizing a transformation of mimic movement inspired by animals and plants. These feathers were to exlpore relation between human presence and the natural world, enhancing the quality of my movements to create an intimate connection with the audience.
The inspiration of the costume-a time of renewal and revival-grass growing from my feet and a lily blooming from my neck-signifies the cyclical resurgence of life. This work investigates on the evolving relationships between humans, plants, and animals, questioning the meanings and ownership of "Vår Vår" (Spring Spring/Our Spring) through an interdisciplinary lens.
It asks:
What is Vår?
Who is Vår?
Whose Vår is it?
What is been celebrated during Vår Vår?
