Concept:
Sunset (暮迟) blends the refined breathing and stepping techniques of Chinese classical dance with the elegant artistry of traditional fan dance. The red fan transforms into a glowing setting sun, while the dancer’s rotating arms evoke the cyclical passage of time. Inspired by the wisdom of Laozi, the ancient Chinese philosopher and founder of Taoism from the 6th century BCE, who wrote in the his book Dao De Jing: “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”—the piece honors the sunset as a sacred moment that unfolds effortlessly and equally for all, symbolizing the natural, harmonious rhythm of life and time.
Through its meditation on the bittersweet beauty of dusk—the fading daylight and serene twilight embrace—Sunset invites viewers to reflect on impermanence, transition, and acceptance, offering a space of calmness, renewal, and deep reverence for the cycles that shape our existence.
