Concept:
I Am What I Am is a solo dance work choreographed and performed by Chang Liu (Leo), created as an homage to the legendary Hong Kong singer and actor Leslie Cheung. Set to Cheung’s iconic anthem of self-acceptance, the piece expresses queerness with vulnerability, defiance, and pride. Drawing inspiration from Cheung’s courage in living openly as a queer figure in a conservative cultural context, the performance becomes a bold act of visibility and empowerment.
Through evocative movement and emotional honesty, it encourages audiences—especially in China—to embrace authenticity and live unapologetically as who they are. The work bridges personal identity with collective yearning, honoring a queer legacy while planting seeds for a freer future.
