Concept:
Farewell (别离) is a duet choreographed and performed by Chang Liu (Leo) and Fubo Sun, drawing deep inspiration from Chen Kaige’s landmark 1993 film Farewell My Concubine (霸王别姬). Set to Leslie Cheung’s poignant song When Love Fades Away, the piece honors both Cheung’s legacy and the film’s powerful portrayal of love, loyalty, and identity across shifting cultural and political landscapes. The choreography reimagines the final parting between the King of Chu and his beloved concubine, framing it as a contemporary story of two queer lovers separated by circumstance.
Through lyrical movement and emotionally resonant physicality, the dance pays tribute to those whose identities and love stories are often relegated to the margins. It becomes a poetic reflection on heartbreak, remembrance, and queer resilience—echoing the tragic beauty and enduring relevance of the film that inspired it.
